Jane's bio

Where I've Lived:
I am the oldest child of Welsh parents who loved music and storytelling. I lived in S. Wales, near Canterbury and in Southampton for university doing B.A. Hons. History. In 1959 I married a scientist and went to Malaysia for 5 years. In 1965 we came to Harrow Ontario.

Why I Write:
I have always loved to make up stories and acted some with my brother. As a teacher, I wrote plays for my classes to perform. I taught English, history and drama at a high school in Malaysia before coming to Ontario where I taught for over 23 more years . When I retired, after 28 years, I had time to write books. I wanted to write about events I knew in my area and my first picture book was about a wonderful annual fair in Harrow in 1995, called If I could go to the Harrow Fair.

My Recent Books:
We often visited Colasanti's tropical greenhouse so I wrote another picture book Let's go to Colasanti's. As mother and grandmother my concern for safety led me to writing two books. I took my children to visit Jack Miner's Bird Sanctuary and imagined an immigrant, Mei Ling discovering the sanctuary and the Canada geese. This yearin 2015, I have another Jack Miner picture book about two geese who arrived in1911 called True Friends.

My Interests led to Books:
My faith in God affects all I do and I wrote A Cookie for the Christ Child for an early reader. As a Hospice volunteer, I met children with dealing cancer so I wrote Nana, I miss you. Loving classical music led me to produce Portraits of an Orchestra. Most of all, I love meeting people and writing up their life stories.
A Love of History led me to write about historic Amherstburg. It was a main stop on the underground railway where two boys met in An Unexpected Friendship 1846.
My longest novel is Two at the Crossroads( 2014) is about 2 women who lived during the difficult times 1780-1852, first in Ohio or Indiana and later in Upper Canada. It is mainly leading up to 1812-14 War and centres on the different life the Shawnee Tecumapese has from Catharine Girty, wife of an Indian interpreter at Fort Malden.
New Project
Soon I am hoping to write about a visit to Point Pelee National Park. We are fortunate to live in an area which has so much to offer us all.
