Education

See where I spent time studying and gaining my education to prepare for my professional life.

2008 2010

Aspen University

Business

I completed my MBA program while I was working full-time for American Express. Much of my course work was online, however it required many hours each week, dedicated to reading the required materials, interacting virtually with the class in real-time, and submitting assignments and exams that would require many hours to learn and prepare. I was self dedicated to earn this degree, had two small children at home, a wife whom worked outside the home, and a full-time job. For several years, I committed to 60-70 hour plus work weeks in order to earn this degree.

2005 2005

Arizona State University - WP Carey School of Business

Field of Study

While working at American Express, I attended this course of study as part of my professional development. Areas of study included: Strategic procurement and supply management; Global supplier selection; The item/service in-sourcing/outsourcing decision; Sourcing strategy development; Linking decisions through e-procurement systems.

1997 2001

William Mitchell College of Law

Law

While attending law school, I worked full-time for a law firm (M-F) as a law clerk & investigator, and also as deputy sheriff. Most weeks I would work at the firm from 8 to 4:30 pm, attend law school classes from 5 until 10 pm, or work at the sheriff's department from 5 to 11 pm. Weekends I would typically pull 8 to 10 hour shifts at the department and then try to catch up on homework. This was my life for four years. A full-time job, almost full-time law school, and a part-time job. Many days I would go days without or little sleep. When I commit myself to something, I do it all the way.

1989 1995

Siena Heights University

Business Administration

When I was attending Siena Heights to obtain my undergraduate degree, I was burning the candle literally at both ends. Often I would work at the Sheriff's Department from 11 pm to 7 am, then pull a shift as a part-time police officer from 7 am to 3 pm. I would sleep a few hours (unless I had homework or was stuck on a case) then go to school from 5 - 10 pm, then back the Sheriff's Department for another night shift. Sometimes I would go days with no sleep....for 6 years this was my life.

1989 1995

Criminal Justice

When I was attending Siena Heights to obtain my undergraduate degree, I was burning the candle literally at both ends. Often I would work at the Sheriff's Department from 11 pm to 7 am, then pull a shift as a part-time police officer from 7 am to 3 pm. I would sleep a few hours (unless I had homework or was stuck on a case) then go to school from 5 - 10 pm, then back the Sheriff's Department for another night shift. Sometimes I would go days with no sleep....for 6 years this was my life.

1992 1992

Kalamazoo Valley Community College

Law Enforcement

In order to attend the police academy, I was the first Berrien County Deputy that requested, and was willing to take a leave of absence from my jail guard duties for a three month period without pay, and willing to pay for the expenses associated with attending a twelve week police academy in order to become a licensed Michigan police officer myself. This later set the stage whereby the department started sending determined jail deputies to the academy to become certified police officers at no cost to the deputy.

1988 1989

Lake Michigan College

I began my college studies at LMC upon leaving active duty military service.

Testimonials

Hear what some of my clients and colleagues have to say about me after working together on various projects throughout my career.

Layne Jeffery was an asset to the Inside Account Management team . Layne's innovative uses of technology helped him to meet and exceed expectations within his performance goals . I enjoyed working with Layne and recommend him as a detail and goal oriented attorney with creative strategic thinking and implementation.

Greg Scheder

Senior Financial Analyst at Thomson Reuters

Layne was a valuable and extremely helpful procurement manager at American Express that we at Protiviti worked with for 3 years. His professionalism, knowledge and consistently intelligent insight to our relationship with Amex was extremely helpful in creating a positive relationship between the two firms. I recommend Layne as an attorney and in any professional situation.

Nicholas Benvenuto

Director at Old Mutual Group

Ten years ago I relied on Layne's legal knowledge to establish entities for our real estate businesses and he did an excellent job. Two years ago, I again required legal assistance in purchasing an existing insurance business and my first call was to Layne. He drafted the letter of intent, reviewed the purchase documents and, most importantly, provided sound advice. Layne will be my first call in the future if I require legal services.

Dean Salminen

Western International Securities

I had the opportunity to work with Layne Jeffery at Manitowoc Cranes. We worked on several unique projects together. I found him to be a hard-working, self-starter, who knows how to get a job done quickly and effectively. Layne handles pressure well and has a positive outlook on resolving problems. He is also a skilled negotiator, who thrives on working on complex contracts. It was a pleasure to work with Layne .

Ida Merritt, MBA, CPSM

Commodity Manager, Manitowoc Cranes

I had the pleasure or working with Layne for a number of years when he was a young attorney. Despite his lack of experience, Layne produced very detailed and thoughtful work product. He successfully completed every challenge given to him. He was well liked and respected by clients, staff and opposing counsel alike.

Cary Miller-Dolan, Esq.

Attorney and Experienced Family Law Alternative Dispute Resolution Professional

Layne won the 2014 IACCM 'Personal Initiative' Innovation Award after he leveraged existing technology to create a solid contract management structure across Manitowoc Cranes globally: a tremendous feat resulting in increased contract visibility/uniformity and major cost savings - a pure win for Manitowoc. Based on his knowledge and passion for the profession, I invited him to join the IACCM Events Advisory Board to help shape the content of future conferences. He's been one of my most valued advisers ever since.

Carina Kuhl

VP Marketing & Events at IACCM (Contract Mgt.)

Few attorneys have the legal and high-level corporate experience Attorney Layne Jeffery possesses. Atty. Jeffery has the knowledge and drive to complete any complex corporate project, on time, done correctly and within budget. His work has taken him all over the world where he successfully fulfilled his legal mission objectives. Smart, personable and always paying attention to detail are Layne's hallmarks. But even beyond that, he is a lawyer of the highest character and integrity. I highly recommend him.

Nicholas C. Zales

Attorney at Law - Zales Law Office

Layne was always praised by his clients for his high work ethic, subject matter knowledge, consistency in project delivery, and for meeting expectations. He was a valued team member who always delivered and contributed innovative ideas to our group. I would highly recommended him for any work effort that he selects.

Janette Walker

Financial Services Consultant and Contractor

I had the unique opportunity to visit Korea with Layne, for a factory inspection during our approval process to be a Manitowoc supplier. Layne's previous experiences on the Korean peninsula proved to make the trip extremely enlightening.

More importantly his professionalism, and ability to communicate complexity in the simplest of terms, as related to the purpose of our trip, and the agreement negotiations, allowed for a level of productivity that is uncommon during a supplier agreement negotiation.

I always find Layne to be professional, competent, congenial, and helpful regardless of circumstance.

Brad Benner

President- at Alps Wire Rope Corporation

I attended one of Layne's presentations at the IACCM national conference. He provided a great overview on how to think about where a company was on the contract management continuum from "have no idea where contracts are or when they expire" to "fully automated, financially integrated, and tagged for reporting ". Provided sensible baby steps to move you along the path. Great resource, open, and friendly and willing to help provide feedback and guidance and structure around problem solving.

Albert Oaten

Vice President of Market Development and Co-Founder at SecureDocs, Inc.

Layne is an easy person to work with and always willing to assist when he can provide help. Very personable.

Ryan Gilbert

Criminal Justice Instructor at Fox Valley Technical College

Layne is not only a great guy but also a great attorney. When he was in private practice I had no hesitation referring clients to him for his expertise and careful case management.

Matt Ludt

Divorce and Family Law Attorney

Layne Jeffery was Director Global Contracts at Manitowoc Cranes when my company, Comer Industries, negotiated a long term agreement. I found Layne to be knowledgeable about contracts and corporate legal matters as you would expect for a Corporate Attorney. However, I was pleasantly impressed with his honesty, integrity and willingness to find compromise that suited both companies. Those qualities are not easy to find in the opposing Corporate Counsel. Layne is a stand up guy who will challenge both sides for a fair and equitable conclusion. He is a tremendous asset for any company's corporate legal staff.

Arlin Perry

President at Comer Industries Inc.

Good luck was smiling on me when Layne and I were partnered to work together at Thomson West. Knowing that my clients, both existing and potential, would be working directly with Layne allowed me to focus solely on the sale at hand. Layne's expansive working knowledge of all the many intricacies of West's vast online research system and his ability to successfully convey his knowledge in an articulate and friendly manner helped close and solidify numerous sales worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Yvonne Herrera

VP, Sales and Business Development at MLLG - My LED Lighting Guide

I have worked with Layne Jeffery at The Manitowoc Company since November 2009 and would consider Layne a strategic thinker and visionary who makes process improvement a priority. His contributions to the company as Director of Global Contracts have made a significant impact in contracts life cycle management process. I would highly recommend Layne for a senior role within any organization which places an emphasis on contracts management process excellence.

Paula Fricke

Supply Chain Analyst at The Manitowoc Company

Layne is very adept and timely at writing business contracts. He handles the work with speed and accuracy at a great price
