Prof. Andrew M. Williamson

"Committed to improving understanding

between Western and Chinese people"

A modern languages scholar and chorister at Repton and graduate from Bristol, I enjoyed a successful business career in the UK and abroad with Commercial Union Assurance (now part of the Aviva Group), from which I retired early in 1999 as Director and Chief Representative for China. There, I led the company’s market entry venture, and was made a Guest Professor of the then Shanghai Finance College of the People’s Bank of China in recognition of my services to insurance education

Previously, I had been responsible for vocational training and education at Commercial Union, including representing the company to the Chartered Insurance Institute, of which I am a Fellow and hold Chartered Insurer status (albeit retired). I have also served the Institute in a variety of capacities, most notably as chair of its Educational Strategy Steering Group. My work in this field qualified me for Chartered Fellowship status of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (again retired)

With this background, I have continued, as an independent academic and consultant, to promote:

* BRITISH BUSINESS INTERESTS ABROAD by writing, lecturing, broadcasting and advising companies about doing business with the Chinese. Before taking normal retirement, I was the International Ambassador at City College Norwich, where I also lectured on International Business (with special emphasis on China market entry strategy) to final year undergraduates studying for the University of East Anglia's Business Management degree

* INSURANCE EDUCATION, both on behalf of the Chartered Insurance Institute (of which I have been a Contract Assessor) and at City College Norwich, where I helped to develop and and then led the first Foundation Degree in Insurance Services awarded by the University of East Anglia

* CHURCH MUSIC, combining the best of traditional and contemporary choral compositions. In particular, I hold a Diploma in Church Music, having specialised in Choir Training; and continue to exercise a periptetic music in worship ministry, both in the UK and France, especially amongst prisoners
